England is fully committed to the 2026 World Cup: confidence, innovation and Tuchel must make the difference
England see 2026 as the tournament where everything comes together: Tuchel's knockout experience, a deep squad and a potentially favorable schedule. But only against Croatia will it become clear whether the confidence is justified.
The tone in the English camp has been set since the first night at their boutique base in Kansas City. While severe weather with tornado warnings passed outside, some international players sought distraction from game five of the American basketball final. When the New York Knicks became champions again after 53 years, players immediately drew parallels with the long English wait for a second world title: this could also be their moment. Even the 'Route 66' slogans at the training complex — a nod to 1966 — reinforce that feeling.
That emotion fits the well-known English pattern of hope and skepticism surrounding major tournaments. However, after decades of 'almosts', confidence in 2026 will be more broadly based. The association has modernized the talent apparatus following the example of France, Spain and Germany and has invested heavily in the national team. The squad is deep and versatile and, above all, in Thomas Tuchel, England now have a manager with proven knockout expertise and natural authority. Where Gareth Southgate managed to forge a team, Tuchel must give the final push towards winning.
That does not alter the fact that tournament football remains erratic. In 2022, statistically their lowest final tournament in recent years, England played the best football according to those involved - a quarter-final against a top country was decided with a missed penalty. Such details can make all the difference. The question is whether the quarter will go well this time.

The tournament also looks more open than usual. Spain and France are considered favorites, but also showed their own fringes; other top European countries got off to a slow start. If England also manages to take the 'soft' side of the schedule as group winners, then a long run is again obvious. At the same time, the pattern of recent tournaments is clear: as soon as the first absolute elite opponent waits, things often stall.
Tuchel brings a more layered tactical approach, but at the same time encounters a well-known problem: how do you maintain control in top matches without a pure 'six'? Elliott Anderson is taking steps in an adapted role, while the abundance of creatives on ten does not automatically produce a balance in midfield. It is an irony that other top countries recognize: France would like a Declan Rice type, Spain a striker with the guarantee of Harry Kane. Argentina and Brazil would not look out of place with the English width - with the difference that they have already won prizes in modern times.
That is precisely why this tournament feels different for England. The opening match against Croatia is an immediate indicator: not only for the top position in the group, but above all to show where the team really stands. The euphoria after the 5-0 away win over Serbia was tempered when Mexico defeated the same opponent 5-1. Was Serbia simply weak, or was England overcome by its own optimism?
Sixty years on from 1966 and with everything that has changed and improved English football, the foundation seems stronger than ever. Now it is important to no longer tempt fate, but to force it. It will soon become clear whether the stars are really aligned this time - first against Croatia, then againstthe knockout in which England must finally overcome that one elite hurdle. This is almost the moment. This time… definitely?
