Manchester City are close to completing the transfer of Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest. According to England manager Thomas Tuchel, the deal could be made official within days. Anderson is a top priority for City, who are preparing for a new chapter now that Enzo Maresca is likely to take over from Pep Guardiola at the helm of the team.
City sees Anderson as the ideal reinforcement, partly because Bernardo Silva is leaving and Rodri is plagued by injuries. With this transfer, Anderson could become the most expensive English player ever. The 21-year-old Anderson had a remarkable year last season despite the turbulent season of Forest, which only reached safety in the Premier League under coach Vitor Pereira. Anderson excelled with the most ball contacts (3,300), the most possessions won (306), the most duels won (297) and the most fouls against him (80) in the competition.
His strong performances also earned him a starting spot for England, where he has played 248 minutes in the three World Cup group matches in Group L so far. Only Ezri Konsa (270) and Harry Kane (264) have made more minutes as outfield players for the England team. Anderson's transfer is expected to be completed for the important round of 32 match against DR Congo.
After England's 2-0 win over Panama, Tuchel expressed his confidence about an early deal: "I think there is a good chance that everything will be finalized before the round of 32," the national coach said. "He plays with a lot of confidence and there were no concerns about his fitness. The medical staff has given the green light, he is fully fit."
Before the match against Panama, there was still doubt as to whether Anderson could start, but with Declan Rice on the bench, he took on the role as controlling midfielder very well. With 93 ball contacts, no one had more, he also completed 63 of his 70 passes and won nine of his sixteen duels.
