After Austria's 0-3 defeat against Spain, an era within the Austrian national team has come to an end. Marko Arnautovic did not keep it dry afterwards: the 37-year-old striker officially announced his retirement after 137 international matches and 49 goals. He tearfully said that he had already made the decision to end his international career before the tournament. Remarkable: Arnautovic became both Austria's top scorer and record international player. He calls his participation in the World Cup, where he scored twice, the absolute highlight of his career. "It affected me enormously. The fact that I will no longer see my second family on the field is hard," said Arnautovic. Emotions also flowed freely in the dressing room, captain David Alaba confirmed: "There were real tears shed." Whether Alaba himself will continue as an international is still uncertain. The Real Madrid defender stated immediately after the elimination that he has not made any decisions about his future, either with club or country. "I was completely focused on this World Cup. Now I have to deal with this painful moment first, then I will think about my next step," said Alaba, whose contract with Real Madrid recently expired. With 117 caps and 15 goals, Alaba is also a key figure for Austria, which may now be on the eve of a major generational change.
