Brazil has suffered a setback at the 2026 World Cup. Raphinha had to leave injured in the 40th minute of the group match against Haiti in Philadelphia. The 29-year-old winger was able to walk off the field himself, but the exact nature and severity of the injury are not yet known.
Brazil started strongly and Raphinha was an emphatic presence. The striker's goal was disallowed early in the match for offside and moments later an attempt rolled just past the far post. Matheus Cunha opened the score with a lucky deflection and shortly afterwards the 2-0 followed in the 36th minute with a nice finish.
Just before half time, Raphinha went to the ground, after which he was replaced by Rayan. It is uncertain whether the winger can play in the coming matches. In the run-up, reference is even made to the hamstring injury of clubmate Lamine Yamal at Barcelona, who missed the end of the season, although nothing has been officially confirmed for Raphinha.
The British channel ITV described the failure as a serious loss; U.S. women's national team coach Emma Hayes called it "a significant loss." Before the tournament, national coach Carlo Ancelotti had labeled the Brazilian as one of the five best players in the world.
The injury concerns come at a time when Brazil are also awaiting the full return of Neymar, who is working to recover from a leg injury. Brazil's last group match is on Wednesday, June 24 in Miami against Scotland. With Morocco–Haiti as the other match in the group, Brazil seems to need a win to secure the top position in Group A.
