Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has made it clear that the club must show more consistency and take steps in Europe. He said this as Massimiliano Allegri prepares for a return to Serie A as a possible new coach in Naples.
After the Scudetto in 2024-25, Napoli finished second in Serie A this season, eleven points behind champions Inter. Under Antonio Conte, the team collected 76 points: the first time in a full season in Serie A for the Italian that he remains below 80 points. In the five biggest European competitions, Conte only scored less in 2017-18 (70 points with Chelsea) and 2021-22 (71 with Tottenham Hotspur). Moreover, Napoli failed in the competition phase of the Champions League. Shortly after the last league match, the club and Conte decided to part ways by mutual agreement.
Allegri (58) was fired from AC Milan after the club missed out on qualifying for the Champions League on the final day. He is about to join Napoli, although Italian media report that his contract with Milan has not yet been formally terminated.
De Laurentiis did not want to anticipate the arrival of Allegri, but did outline his course. “We cannot and should not talk about Allegri until we really have him,” the president said. "Decisions are made with consistency in mind. Now that we finally have a Federal President who shares my ideas - football is an industry, albeit an atypical one - I am convinced that all of Italian football must work hard and rebuild together with Malago.
"The difference is that Americans always move forward, while in Italy we stand still. That's because those in power don't move. I've been here for 22 years; we are the only club that kept climbing. We have to stay up there and improve in Europe."
