Lube Civitanova gave the preparation an extra boost with a clear 3-0 win over Cisterna Volley. In a friendly match at the PalaCiarapica in San Severino Marche, the Italian vice-champion won 25-22, 25-22 and 25-21. In front of a well-filled stand with approximately 600 spectators, coach Giampaolo Medei's team put the first line under their ambitions for the new season.
The match was the first real test against an opponent from the highest Italian division, after five previous practice matches against clubs from Serie A2. Lube looked fresh and controlled in the side-out, kept Cisterna's service pressure in check and struck at exactly the right moments on his own serve. The set positions tell the story: every time Cisterna seemed to be coming back, Lube increased the pace and made the difference in the closing stages.
On an individual level, Aleksandar Nikolov received the most attention. The Bulgarian corner player, an international for his country, was the only player to record a double score with 12 points, becoming the most productive force in the Lube side. Without forcing and with a high efficiency in attack and passing, he underlined his form early in the preparation.
The role of his younger brother, Simeon Nikolov, was also special. The playmaker started in the starting line-up and directed the Lube game with great flexibility. He distributed the attacking play well and also recorded one point. It was the first time that the two Bulgarian brothers played together in one club team, a fact that added extra sparkle to the evening in San Severino Marche.
For Lube - second in the competition last season - this convincing victory is mainly a confirmation that the contours of the team are in place. The combinations ran smoothly, the block defense was alert and the bench brought energy when needed. Partly thanks to the Nikolov brothers, the selection seems to be developing in time the automatisms that make the difference in the SuperLega.
Although the result in the preparation is mainly about confidence, the tone has been set. With this 3-0 against oneWith SuperLega opponent in hand, Lube can work on details towards the season opener in the coming weeks. The ambition is clearly stated: to compete for the title. If the chemistry between Aleksandar and Simeon continues to develop, Lube will have an asset in the hunt for the championship trophy.
