Bellingham shows full potential for England in World Cup win over Croatia according to Tuchel

England started the 2026 World Cup strongly with a 4-2 victory over Croatia, thanks in part to an outstanding Jude Bellingham. National coach Thomas Tuchel spoke highly of his midfielder and emphasized the importance of team spirit as England prepare for their next group match against Ghana.

England's start at the 2026 World Cup has been convincing. The English defeated Croatia 4-2, with Jude Bellingham playing a prominent role as an attacking midfielder. The young playmaker opened at number 10 and capped his performance with a goal in Dallas.

National coach Thomas Tuchel said afterwards that he had seen Bellingham's full potential. “I saw a strong team performance, Jude's full potential and total commitment to the team,” said Tuchel. "A match and tournament like this brings out the best in him."

Before the game, there was competition between Bellingham and Morgan Rogers for a starting spot. Both switched positions during the training camp in Florida, but Bellingham has now become England's undisputed first choice as number 10.

Tuchel underlined the importance of cooperation within the team: "The connections between Jude and Harry Kane, and between the midfield with Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson, must continue to develop. A big step has been taken because Jude has fully adapted to our team spirit."

The national coach expects a completely different game pattern in the next match against Ghana. "Ghana is physically strong, fast and dangerous on the counter. We have to stay alert without losing our momentum."

The players who did not play against Croatia were immediately given the opportunity to show themselves in a practice match against Sporting KC. Tuchel was pleased with their attitude: "Everyone keeps themselves sharp and trains at a high level. It is up to us to ensure that no laziness creeps in."

Tuchel has a full selection against Ghana. Bukayo Saka, who was slightly injured, has trained fully again and is available, although Tuchel did not want to reveal whether he will start in the starting line-up: "He no longer feels any pain and is fully available."

With confidence after the win over Croatia and a fit selection, England is looking forward to the next group match in Boston.
