A comeback from nowhere. Just when everything seemed to be going in Senegal's favor, Belgium straightened out: in the absolute final phase, Romelu Lukaku and Youri Tielemans completely opened up an apparently lost match. After 90 minutes the score was 2-2 and the 2026 World Cup had to be extended.
Belgium started well, with Kevin De Bruyne as playmaker and the menacing Jérémy Doku as the main weapon on the flanks. Yet Senegal gradually took over. Pape Thiaw's side - remarkably with Kalidou Koulibaly and Nicolas Jackson initially on the bench - increased tempo and intensity and dominated the sides.
The dominance paid off after 25 minutes: Diarra composedly finished for 1-0. Belgium visibly struggled to gain traction and could hardly connect at the front. Rudi Garcia's intervention at halftime, with Lukaku for the pale Charles De Ketelaere, also did not immediately turn things around.
Senegal continued to set the tone and pressed on. After first having a big chance for Diarra, the deserved 2-0 came after all: Sarr took advantage of a long ball from Jakobs and blasted unstoppably past Thibaut Courtois. At that moment the match seemed decided; Belgium looked toothless, Senegal controlled with authority.
But football remains unpredictable. Four minutes before the end, Lukaku scored the tying goal, after a low cross from Dodi Lukebakio. What seemed like a goal of honor became the prelude to a hammer blow two minutes later: goalkeeper Diaw completely misjudged a high ball and Tielemans headed in the 2-2.
In just a few minutes the match turned from complete Senegalese control to a surprising draw. A hard blow for the Africans and an escape for Belgium, which secured extra time thanks to the late offensive. The decision will be made in extra time.
