Belgium remains dry at the World Cup: 69 shots without a goal, pressure towards New Zealand

Belgium again fails to score at the World Cup. After 1-1 against Egypt, the match against Iran ended 0-0. According to Opta, Belgium has already fired 69 shots without a hit since the last World Cup goal. It must be a hit against New Zealand.

Belgium is still waiting for its first victory at this World Cup. On the night from Sunday to Monday, the Red Devils team was stuck at 0-0 against Iran, after previously drawing 1-1 against Egypt. With the knockout phase in sight, the pressure is growing: goals are desperately needed against New Zealand.

The numbers underline the problem. Data portal Opta reports that Belgium has already made 69 goal attempts without scoring since its last own World Cup goal. In the draw against Egypt, the Belgian goal even came about through an own goal by Mohamed Hany. Against Iran, the Red Devils produced 23 shots without result. It is the first time since the World Cup match with Saudi Arabia in 1994 that Belgium shot so many times without scoring; then there were 28.

The last Belgian World Cup goal came from Michy Batshuayi in the 1-0 win over Canada in 2022. This was followed by a 0-2 defeat against Morocco and a 0-0 against Croatia. Belgium now has four World Cup matches in a row without an own goal.

From a Belgian perspective, the hope remains that the ban will be broken soon. A return is necessary for Saturday's match against New Zealand to keep the path to the knockout phase open.
