Beccacece resigns as coach of Ecuador after disappointing World Cup
Sebastian Beccacece has resigned as Ecuador coach after a disappointing performance at the World Cup. The team won only one match and was defeated by Mexico in the knockout phase.
Sebastian Beccacece has decided to step down from his position as coach of the Ecuadorian national team after a disappointing World Cup campaign. Ecuador, which was previously considered a dark horse for a deeper run in the tournament, only managed to win one of the four matches played and was defeated 2-0 by hosts Mexico in the round of 32.
"Today it is time to say goodbye to a beautiful, wonderful family, with deep gratitude, great serenity and a sense of inner peace. We have done our utmost," Beccacece told DS Sport. "That's how football works. Results are what matter. I think the first half [against Mexico] was not up to what our process has been. Life is like that too – a first half that wasn't the best. That means we have to leave the tournament with this sadness, but also with the joy that we have a group of players who have committed themselves, and that will pay off."
Ecuador managed just one shot on target against Mexico during the tournament, while conceding multiple goals for the first time since a 2-1 defeat to Venezuela in the 2024 Copa America. Beccacece explained: "Our contract ended with the World Cup. I don't think we were able to keep the promise: to make this the best World Cup ever. That's why I have to leave. I would have liked to continue because what I received from the players and management justified the possibility of continuity. But I understand how this works and it hurts, but I think the decision was clear."
The Ecuadorian side only managed one win, against Germany, which was enough for them to advance to the knockout stages. They lost to Ivory Coast and drew against Curaçao in their group campaign. “We fought, but we couldn't find the goal that would give us a boost,” Beccacece added. "The legacy belongs to the players, because they were the youngest team in Ecuador. I have no complaints, only gratitude to the people and the players. I have received so much gratitude and affection from the bottom of my heart. The boys gave me two beautiful hours after the match and that is what we are left with."
Beccacece took charge of Ecuador in August 2024 and led La Tri to second place in South America's World Cup qualifying standings. In total, he won nine of his 24 games as coach, with only three defeats.
