Barcelona extends with Christensen: Flick's trust and lower salary burden are the deciding factors

Despite injuries, Andreas Christensen will stay at Barcelona longer. According to SPORT, the confidence of trainer Hansi Flick and a significantly lower salary were the deciding factor. There is a clause to end in June 2027.

Barcelona and Andreas Christensen have reached an agreement in principle on a two-season contract extension. The signatures are expected within a few days. Striking: the new agreement contains a clause that offers both parties the option to end the collaboration in June 2027. The Danish defender's previous contract expired on June 30, but despite two seasons full of injuries, he remains in Catalonia.

According to SPORT, it was mainly the confidence of trainer Hansi Flick that was decisive. The German appreciates Christensen's experience, reliability and versatility; he can play both centrally at the back and in midfield. Flick sees the thirty-year-old international as valuable width for a season in which Barça wants to participate on all fronts.

Christensen's professional attitude is also praised within the club. He was never seen as a problem causer and always put the team's interests first. His injury status was even used administratively to enable registrations of players such as Dani Olmo and, previously, João Cancelo. This thinking earned him a lot of respect internally.

Financially, there has been a significant salary reduction for the defender. This will reduce Barcelona's wage bill and create space to tackle other priorities, especially the arrival of a new centre-forward.

The line was also established early on at an administrative level. After Christensen's knee injury in December, Joan Laporta made it clear that the club would not drop the player provided he agreed to modified conditions. Christensen agreed.

Since his arrival in the summer of 2022 (transfer-free from Chelsea), the Dane has had little continuity. In December he suffered a partial tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, which meant he only returned to action in the last league match against Valencia. The season before he suffered from Achilles and muscle problems, which limited him to only six appearances in the first year under Flick. Despite this, Barcelona never seriously considered parting ways. The staff remains convinced that Christensen, if he remains fit, can still be of value and regain the level of his first Catalan season.
