Barcelona doesn't think La Masia pearl is enough: Deco is chasing
According to Sports.
Background
Ronald Araújo, who has been a foundation in Barcelona's defense in recent seasons, is now a Liverpool player. His departure has forced the club to actively search for an experienced centre-back, which will be a key focus in the coming weeks. The development of younger players from La Masia remains a priority, but the club recognizes the need for an experienced hand alongside them.
Why this matters
Ronald Araújo's departure to Liverpool has a significant impact on FC Barcelona's defensive structure. Araújo was not only a key player, but also a leader in the backline, making the need for an experienced center back urgent. This highlights the challenges the club faces in the current transfer market, especially with the summer transfer window deadline looming.
Key points
- Barcelona does not consider La Masia pearl to be enough: Deco is chasing.
- After the departure of Ronald Araújo to Liverpool, Barcelona is betting on an experienced centre-back.
- Barcelona decide academy gem is not enough as Deco hunts new defensive signing.
Barcelona has shifted priorities in the transfer market now that the selection has to continue without Ronald Araújo. Following the transfer of the Uruguayan to Liverpool, the need for an experienced centre-back has risen to the top of the wish list. According to reports from the club management, sporting director Deco urges quick action: the internal flow offers prospects, but relying solely on a La Masia pearl is seen as too risky at this stage.
Araújo served as a defensive anchor and leader in recent seasons. With his departure, not only has a starting position become vacant, but a portion of experience and personality have also disappeared from the backline. Barcelona is known for training its own defenders and now sees talent ready, but the technical staff wants to protect the growth path of those young player(s) by letting them develop alongside a veteran. A direct successor with international baggage must bring peace, coaching and dueling power to the heart of the defense.
The profile Deco is aiming for speaks for itself: a centre-back who can read the game, is comfortable on the ball and remains upright in a high defensive block. Aerial duels, positional discipline and leadership are mentioned as core criteria. Whether this will be a right- or left-footed defender partly depends on the complementarity with the current options in the selection. In all scenarios, the requirement is clear: someone who will be there from match day one.
The timing of the search puts extra pressure on the club. The transfer window is closing and the market for experienced central defenders is traditionally tight. In addition, Barcelona continues to take financial preconditions into account. Creative constructions - such as a rental solution or an agreement with a modest transfer fee and performance bonuses - are possible, provided the salary range allows it. That also explains why the club is exploring various avenues in parallel.
The choice of experience does not mean that the door closes for La Masia. On the contrary: the youth playerfor which there are high internal expectations, remains part of the plans and can make valuable minutes in rotation or cup tournaments. The presence of a refined colleague should accelerate the learning curve and reduce the margin of error in top duels. In a season where Barcelona wants to compete in both the domestic league and in Europe, the balance between talent and routine is crucial.
The coming days will be decisive. Deco leads the discussions and weighs sporting fitness, financial feasibility and availability against each other. Goal: sign a defender before the market closes who will stabilize the defense and immediately strengthen the locker room. The supporters know that the bar is high; the club management as well. Now it is important to find the right link to enter the post-Araújo era at the back with confidence.
What's happening now
FC Barcelona will now have to focus on finding a suitable replacement who not only brings experience, but can also contribute to the development of young talent from La Masia. Sporting director Deco has already indicated that the club must act quickly to sign a new defender. The choice of a player with international experience is crucial to ensure defensive stability and strengthen the team before the start of the season.
