Arsenal strengthens selection with German striker Selina Cerci

Arsenal recently confirmed the signing of German striker Selina Cerci, who joined from Hoffenheim on a free transfer. The 26-year-old forward has spent her entire career in the Frauen-Bundesliga and has scored an impressive 34 goals in 47 games for Hoffenheim. Her impressive performances helped the club to a fourth-place finish in the 2025-26 season. In addition, Cerci has played 20 times for Germany and scored five goals.

The transfer comes at a crucial time for Arsenal as they look to fill the void left by Beth Mead, who left for English champions Manchester City this summer. According to sources, Cerci has signed a two-year contract with an option for a further 12 months. “It's a great honor for me,” Cerci said. "It didn't matter which other clubs were interested; I wanted to play for Arsenal."

Cerci started her career with strong spells at Werder Bremen and Turbine Potsdam, but suffered a cruciate ligament injury in March 2022 that forced her to miss the Women's Euros and the Women's World Cup a year later. After a move to Hoffenheim via FC Köln, she regained her form and twice finished second on the top scorer list with 16 goals.

“She is an instinctive goalscorer with a proven track record in the Bundesliga,” said Clare Wheatley, Arsenal's director of women's football. “We believe she is in a strong position to make the transition to English football.” Last season, Cerci also added assists to her game, with nine assists in the league, which was good for joint second place in the division, along with her new teammate Georgia Stanway, who previously played for Bayern Munich.

“[Selina] has impressive goal stats and brings good presence, physical strength and attacking intent,” added coach Renee Slegers. “Combined with her strong work ethic, we believe these qualities make her a great addition to our roster.”

In the 2025-26 season, Arsenal were the second-highest goalscorers in the WSL, behind Manchester City, but their title challenge came to a halt due to busy fixtures in the final weeks of the season. Club icon Mead, 31, was a reliable option for nine seasons but was injured for much of last season and managed just two goals in the league before being released and heading to the champions.

In Cerci, Arsenal have signed a player who, at 26, is entering her prime and has consistently shown her goal-scoring instincts despite not having played for the two German football giants, Bayern Munich and Wolfsburg. She has said she is excited about "stepping out of my comfort zone", and this will be her first experience outside Germany, as well as playing Champions League football.

How quickly she adapts will be important, as not every foreign player integrates quickly. To illustrate, her compatriot Lea Schuller managed just one goal in 11 games (six as a starter) for Manchester United last season, despite her impressive background in German football. Arsenal, that the last twoseasons have started slowly, cannot afford a slow start if they want to overtake leaders City and win their first title since 2019.
