Arsenal says goodbye to head of sports science Tom Allen; Sam Wilson is also leaving
Shortly after winning their first league title in 22 years, Arsenal have announced that Tom Allen, head of sports science and performance, is leaving the club. Performance coach Sam Wilson is also on his way to Parma in Serie A. The departing staff members played an important role in the championship and the recovery of players after injuries.
Arsenal have parted ways with head of sports science and performance Tom Allen. Allen joined from Aston Villa in 2017 as a sports scientist and rose to his current role in 2022 following the departure of Shad Forsyth. Allen, 35, was one of the pillars behind the recent Premier League title and was visible, along with the squad and staff, at the championship celebrations on the Selhurst Park pitch in May.
Allen's departure is notable considering it comes just a month after the end of the season. Performance coach Sam Wilson is also on the verge of leaving Arsenal. Wilson has been with the London club since 2014, serving as a member of the first-team coaching staff for the past seven years. He was closely involved in the recovery process of injured players and in the guidance during the warm-up and cool-down around the matches. Wilson will continue his career with Parma in Serie A.
These personnel changes follow shortly after the departure of club doctor Zafar Iqbal, which was announced earlier this month. Arsenal had to deal with several injuries last season to basic players such as Martin Odegaard, Mikel Merino, Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz. The departures of Allen and Wilson mean another overhaul in Arsenal's medical and performance department, coming on the heels of the historic championship.
