Arsenal have completed the signing of Illan Meslier. The Frenchman comes on a free transfer after the expiry of his contract with Leeds United and signs a two-year deal in London, with a club option for another season. Sportingly, Meslier offers Arsenal a goalkeeper with length, reach and proven reflexes in English football. His extensive track record at Leeds - including promotion and relegation battles - gives Mikel Arteta extra security and depth in the goalkeeping line-up for both league and cup matches. The presence of an experienced, but still relatively young, goalkeeper reduces the risks of injuries or suspensions and creates healthy competition at London Colney.
With this move, Arsenal keeps control of the goalkeeping hierarchy: Raya remains undisputed number one, Meslier can immediately settle into a supporting role and is ready to move on if the composition changes. This has placed an important piece of the puzzle in the selection for next season, while Leeds United sees a club icon of recent years leave after a long period under the bar at Elland Road.
