Akanji wants to stay at Inter after a strong loan season under Chivu

Manuel Akanji enjoyed his first season at Inter under Cristian Chivu and wants to stay. The Swiss, currently competing in the World Cup, won the double, making 45 appearances and leading several defensive statistics.

Manuel Akanji wants to continue his adventure at Inter after a convincing first season in Milan. The central defender was loaned out by Manchester City in 2025/26 and flourished under coach Cristian Chivu, resulting in the domestic double.

The 28-year-old Swiss made 45 appearances in all competitions, 40 of which as a starter. Defensively he was rock solid: Inter kept 18 clean sheets with Akanji on the field; only goalkeeper Yann Sommer had a higher number with 20 clean sheets. In addition, Akanji led the Nerazzurri side in crucial defensive metrics: 47 interceptions, 139 away defenses and 76 header clearances.

The lease agreement included an option to purchase, and Akanji emphasizes that he would like to continue under Chivu. The Romanian trainer recently extended until 2028, which underlines the continuity in the project.

Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport, Akanji called Inter “a great learning experience” where he has grown in several areas. He explained that he did not often play in a three-man defense at his club, but that he got to know and read that role better at Inter. If a five-man backline is switched to in the future, he says he knows exactly what to do.

Akanji is very positive about Chivu: the trainer understands players, has experienced the same situations as a former top footballer and knows what Inter needs. According to the defender, his communicative and empathetic approach - often in conversation and also listening to the group - creates a strong bond within the selection.

Akanji is currently on the road with Switzerland at the World Cup, but his preference for a longer stay at Inter is clear. The ball therefore seems to be in the clubs' court to exercise the option of a permanent transfer.
