Lawyer: "Despite the qualities of Ivory Coast, I have a good feeling"

Curaçao is chasing its first ever World Cup victory against Ivory Coast and a ticket for the knockout phase; Dick Advocaat remains positive despite the strong opponent.

Curaçao is looking forward to the last group match at the 2026 World Cup. The agenda has been cleared on the island: work will stop from the beginning of the afternoon so that everyone can sit in front of the TV at 4 p.m. local time (10 p.m. in the Netherlands). A historic milestone beckons for Dick Advocaat and his team: with a win over Ivory Coast, Curaçao not only takes its first victory ever at a World Cup, but the next round is also almost certain.

That assignment is tough. Ivory Coast has already shown itself in this group with a win over Ecuador (1-0) and a narrow defeat against Germany (1-2). Moreover, the Africans recently demonstrated their form with a 1-2 victory in and against France in an exhibition match. “We are in a group with three great teams,” Advocaat said at the closing press conference in Philadelphia. "Ivory Coast won 1-2 in France in an exhibition match not so long ago. They simply have an excellent team."

Curaçao wants to build on the game plan from the previous match against Ecuador (0-0). The team hopes to achieve results again with a compact organization, discipline without the ball and courage in transitions. Advocaat emphasized the special nature of this campaign: "We should be proud that we can play against those types of countries. And we want to do that as well as possible and get a good result, let that be clear. If we play as well as we did against Ecuador, we are well in the right direction. Despite the qualities of Ivory Coast, I have a good feeling."

Curaçao heads into the decisive evening with that mix of realism and confidence. The stakes are clear: three points deliver a historic World Cup victory and make the step to the knockout phase very likely. The island holds its breath; Advocaat's team wants to write history.
