AC Milan breaks club record in attempt to solve striker problem

AC Milan has reached an agreement with Paris Saint-Germain over the transfer of Gonçalo Ramos. The Portuguese striker must strengthen the attacking line in the fashion city. And Milan is willing to pay a pretty penny for that. On Friday, The Athletic reported that Milan and PSG have reached an agreement on the transfer of Ramos. He's not cheap. It would be the most expensive transfer in Serie A since Romelu Lukaku's switch from Manchester United to Internazionale in 2019 (74 million euros). Milan's own transfer record is also being thrown out of the books. In 2019, the Rossoneri paid 49.5 million euros for Rafael Leão, who came from Lille. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the transfer fee is now between sixty and seventy million euros. In Paris, Ramos played a supporting role in Luis Enrique's successful formation, who opted for Ousmane Dembélé, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Désiré Doué in the vanguard at key moments. Last season, Ramos made thirty appearances in Ligue 1, thirteen of those appearances were as a starter. Despite (or perhaps because of) that supporting role, the striker was sought after by top European clubs. Milan now trumps the competition. Owner Gerry Cardinale's good relationship with PSG chairman Nasser Al-Khelaïfi would have been the deciding factor, The Athletic knows. And so Ramos becomes the first signing of the Rúben Amorim era. The Portuguese trainer took over from Massimiliano Allegri this summer, who had a disappointing season with the red and blacks and missed out on Champions League football. Amorim was eager to work with his compatriot and knows him well. Ramos himself also liked the collaboration with the trainer, which also made it easy to complete the deal quickly. The striker is currently in the United States with the Portugal national team for the World Cup and underwent his medical examination in Florida. Ramos is now seen as the player who must solve Milan's striker problem. Many top strikers have come to the San Siro in recent years, but none of them could really make a difference. Since the summer of 2022, Divock Origi, Luka Jovic, Santiago Giménez, Álvaro Morata, João Félix, Tammy Abraham, Christopher Nkunku and Niclas Füllkrug have joined the Rossoneri. Last season, Allegri preferred to opt for an attacking duo with wingers such as Christian Pulisic and Rafael Leão.
