Aaron Ramsey new head coach of Oxford United: 'Ready for the challenge'

Aaron Ramsey has been appointed as the new head coach of Oxford United. The former midfielder for Arsenal and Wales, among others, immediately retires from coaching after his playing career and is ambitious for his first permanent coaching position.

Aaron Ramsey has been officially presented as the new head coach of Oxford United. The 35-year-old former midfielder, who hung up his football boots in April, is taking on his first permanent job as head coach. Previously, Ramsey was briefly interim manager at Cardiff City at the end of the 2024-25 season, where he took charge of the final three games.

During his first press conference, Ramsey said he was fully ready: "I wouldn't be in this place if I wasn't ready. I've been working towards this for a few years. When I had the first conversations with the club and heard the ambitions, I knew this was the right place for me."

Ramsey replaces Matt Bloomfield, who was sacked following Oxford United's relegation from the Championship. The club now faces the challenge of returning to the highest level. While Ramsey is cautious about immediate promotional goals, he emphasizes “creating the right habits and behaviors every day” within the squad. "That forms the basis on which success will follow. I have a clear way of playing in mind, with its own identity and principles."

Ramsey can draw on years of experience at the highest level. He played more than 500 games, most of them under Arsène Wenger at Arsenal, but also worked with coaches such as Unai Emery, Andrea Pirlo and Maurizio Sarri. Internationally he collected 86 caps for Wales. About his coaching style, Ramsey remains modest about who inspires him: "I have played under many top coaches, and I have brought something from them all. That elite environment gives me the confidence to lead and inspire this group."

Ramsey expresses his desire to enthuse the supporters: "I want fans to be proud when they come to watch Oxford United. We need the fans for our shared success. I see a lot of potential in this group of players; it is now about forming unity and living my vision."

With this appointment, Oxford United is fully committed to new impetus, with Ramsey immediately trying to bring a breath of fresh air through the club.
